Torah: Tishrei & Bereishit

Tishrei is the month that carries the whole year. It moves from the shofar of Rosh Hashanah, through the white of Yom Kippur, into the sukkah, and on to the dancing of Simchat Torah. Then, without a pause, the scroll rolls back to its first word and we begin again with Bereishit. These pieces walk that road, from the days of judgment to the days of dwelling, and on into the weekly parsha.

Rosh Hashanah and the Days of Return

Remembrance, the hidden face, and the song that witnesses.

Sukkot

The temporary house, the four kinds, the water poured on the altar, and the guests who come to the sukkah.

Chol HaMoed and Hoshana Rabbah

Ordinary days made holy, the willows beaten on the last open gate, and water and wine.

Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah

The one extra day the King asks us to stay, and the dancing with a scroll we cannot read while we dance.

Bereishit and the weekly parsha

From Shabbat Bereishit on, a weekly parsha piece for the home: learned, warm, and short enough to share at the table. New pieces will appear here each week.
